Scarlett Johansson discussed a costume idea for “Captain America: Winter Soldier” that was “quickly killed” in a recent interview.
Natasha Romanoff first wore more comfortable civilian gear in the 2014picture, which included a brown leather jacket and a striped khaki sweatshirt. Scarlet Johansson stated in a new interview with Fatherly that those relaxed looks could have been very different.
At the time, Marvel was interested in the character being a shape-shifter,” Johansson revealed. “When we were doing Captain America: The Winter Soldier — this is a really funny thing — the look is fantastic and utilitarian. She first drives up in this beautiful car and picks up Cap, and initially in the script, it was like, she arrives in her tennis whites, with a blonde wig.”
“It was very quickly killed.”
It was due to a “cultural shift” favoring female protagonists, she explained. According to the 36-year-old, “You work with a lot of male writers. Things were shifting. You have to be a part of the change. Audiences are also demanding stuff and there’s a cultural shift and it feeds everything into a more progressive direction. It’s been a process, it’s been a process.”
Johansson went on to talk about how Black Widow grew from a prop to a three-dimensional character, enabling for her real emergence as a series mainstay.
“After ‘Iron Man’ to going into ‘Avengers,’ there’s been an evolution of her look,” Johansson told the outlet. “I think part of that is just gaining the trust of the executives at Marvel and kind of sitting in the character and just being able to make decisions for her. That really happened fairly early on. I mean, in ‘Iron Man 2.’ ”
During the making of “Black Widow,” Johansson participated in a roundtable discussion with journalists regarding her character’s sexualization.
“I mean, you look back at ‘Iron Man 2,’ and while it was really fun and had a lot of great moments in it, the character is so sexualized, you know?” she stated “Really talked about like she’s a piece of something, like a possession or a thing or whatever — like a piece of ass, really.”
She also attributes the change of her appearance to “gaining the trust of the executives at Marvel and kind of sitting in the character and just being able to make decisions for her,” “fairly early on.”
Despite the fact that the actress, who is expecting her second child, considers the role “very mindful, thoughtful, and considerate,” she has opted to quit the franchise. Her final appearance as Natasha will be in Black Widow, which is presently streaming on Disney Plus.
“I feel really satisfied with this film. It feels like a great way to out for this chapter of my Marvel identity,” she said.
Nonetheless, she’s keeping the door open for future prospects.
“I would love to be able to continue to collaborate with Marvel in other ways because I think there’s just an incredible wealth of stories there,” Johansson said. “Re-imagining this genre is something that I find very interesting. I think there’s a lot of opportunities to tell these stories in different ways than audiences have come to expect.”
The “Black Widow” actor also discussed how she has evolved since she originally played the character in the interview, which was published by Hello Beautiful. “I’ll be 35 years old and I’m a mom and my life is different,” she explained. “Obviously, 10 years have passed and things have happened and I have a much different, more evolved understanding of myself. As a woman, I’m in a different place in my life, you know?”
